Twilight of the Golds part of
URI’s ongoing Honors Colloquium

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — November 18, 2002 — The University of Rhode Island’s Providence Campus will present a staged reading of the Broadway play Twilight of the Golds by Jonathan Tolins, a gripping drama about one family that explores some of the moral and ethical issues resulting from knowledge acquired through genetic testing. Twilight of the Golds will be presented Dec. 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. in the Paff Auditorium of the college, located at 80 Washington St. It is free and open to the public. The play, produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., concludes URI’s semester-long Honors Colloquium “Genetic Technology and Public Policy in the New Millennium.”

Set against a backdrop of Wagner’s epic The Ring of the Nibelung, the play documents the destruction of the Gold family as the adult daughter discovers information about her unborn child through genetic testing which ultimately unravels the fabric of the entire family. The play is directed and designed by Steven Pennell of Cranston, artist-in-residence at URI’s Providence Campus.

Featured in the performance are Bob Colonna of Providence, a lifelong fixture on the local theatre scene; Elaine Foster Perry of Cranston, professor emerita from the Rhode Island College Department of Music, Theatre and Dance; Vince Petronio of Coventry, a local actor and a member of URI’s Communication Studies faculty; Carol Schlink of Providence, local theatre teacher and actress; and Frank Toti of Cranston, a local actor.

Major sponsors for the colloquium series are URI’s Honors Program, The URI Foundation, Theta Chi Fraternity, The Providence Journal, the Rhode Island Committee for the Humanities, the Joan Irvine Smith and Athalie R. Clarke Foundation, and the URI President’s Office.
