KINGSTON, R.I. — August 22, 2000 – The University of Rhode Island, with sponsorship from The Providence Journal, will present a timely and thought-provoking series on nonviolence this fall. URI’s Honors Colloquium, “Nonviolence: Legacies of the Past, Bridges to the Future,” is a semester-long series of free, public programs. Speakers include civil rights activist Coretta Scott King, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Pulitzer Prize winner David Halberstam and folk singer Pete Seeger. Two URI professors coordinate this year’s colloquium: Arthur Stein, professor of political science and peace studies and Lynne Derbyshire, assistant professor of communications studies & women studies. While the colloquium is designed for college students and the general public, students in grades K-12 will be invited to reflect on the subject by participating in a peace poster project this fall.
