Narragansett — February 22, 2000 — Teachers who want to take a brief, but instructive ride on the information superhighway can sign up for a short course in web page design through the Narragansett Bay Classroom at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography. “Basic Web Page Design for Educators” will be held on two Saturdays, March 18 and 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the Coastal Institute Building on the URI Narragansett Bay Campus. The course will instruct educators about how to use World Wide Web (WWW)-based lessons to support classroom teaching. The “hands-on” class begins with the basics of web page design and concludes with the students creating their own WWW-based lessons. Topics include the advantages of WWW-based lessons, page and site layout consideration, design techniques, and instruction in creating a web-based lesson. Course instructors are URI Graduate School of Oceanography outreach scientists Dr. Robert Pockalny and Christopher Knowlton. The course is designed primarily for teachers who have completed the Rhode Island Teachers and Technology Program and can bring their own laptop computers received through the program. A limited number of computers are available for other teachers. Internet connections will be available for participants to connect their laptops. The fee for “Basic Web Page Design for Educators” is $130 per person for the non-credit option. A for-credit option is also available.
