The series, free and open to the public, is designed to promote understanding of self and others. Andrew Winters, assistant director, housing and residential life at URI, will be the discussion host. The story of psychologist Evelyn Hooker, whose research eventually led the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its manual of mental disorders. Six men share the joy and the pain of their journey from female to male, challenging us to re-examine notions about gender, personality, sexuality identity. Before Stonewall: The Making of a Gay and Lesbian Community (1994). Traces the history of homosexuality in America from the 1920s as it builds toward the Gay Liberation Movement, which exploded into prominence following the police raid on Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in NYC, and the three-day riot that followed; 1999 marks the 30th anniversary of Stonewall. This program is being held as part of the Fifth Annual Symposium on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues at the University of Rhode Island.
