URI Fashion Merchandising Society to present annual fashion show

KINGSTON, R.I. — March 26, 1999 — Do you want to see what designs University of Rhode Island students have on the world of fashion? Or do you just want to have a fun night out, seeing just how creative URI Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design students are? Then be at the “Millennium” fashion show Wednesday, April 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Memorial Union. Tickets for students are $3, and general admission is $5. Tickets can be purchased at the Memorial Union Box Office, Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is 401-874-2832. About 70 student-designed and -created outfits will be modeled by students in the department. “The audience will see a diverse group of students with a variety of ideas. The students have taken the risk to show their creativity to the community, “ said Marierose Benoit, the president of the URI Fashion Merchandising Society and a URI junior majoring in textile marketing. The Bridgeport, Conn. resident is also creating several garments for the show. “This is art, and it’s exciting and vibrant. This is art you can wear.” Benoit said music will accompany the models in their creations, and a master of ceremonies will announce the name of the creator and theme of each student’s fashion line. During the show’s opening and intermission, one of the URI dance troupes, the Flava Unit, will perform. “Come get ideas for your prom, your career, and get a look at the talent at URI,” Benoit said.
