features director of the Syracuse University Center for Research on Aggression KINGSTON, R.I. — November 5, 1999 — The 26th Annual Robert and Augusta Finkelstein Memorial Lecture at the University of Rhode Island Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. will feature Arnold P. Goldstein, director of the Syracuse University Center for Research on Aggression. Goldstein will speak on “Low-Level Aggression: First Steps on the Ladder to Violence,” in the Barry Marks Auditorium of the Chafee Social Science Center at URI’s Kingston Campus. The lecture is free and open to the public. Goldstein is professor emeritus of education and psychology at Syracuse University. He was also director of the New York State Task Force on Juvenile Gangs, and is now a member of the American Psychological Association Commission on Youth Violence, Council of Representatives, International Society for Research on Aggression, and associate editor of the journal Aggressive Behavior. He has developed three increasingly comprehensive approaches to prosocial skills training, Skillstreaming, Aggression Replacement Training, and The Prepare Curriculum. Much of his research has focused on helping children replace anti-social, aggressive behaviors with constructive, alternative means of seeking life satisfaction and effectiveness. Goldstein received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Pennsylvania State University. In 1973, the University of Rhode Island established the Robert Finkelstein Memorial Lecture Series in honor of the late Robert Finkelstein, a noted Rhode Island industrialist and staunch believer in state and federal support of elementary and secondary education. The lecture series, founded by the generosity of Augusta Finkelstein in memory of her husband, was renamed in her honor following her death in 1997.
