URI announces timely political tips

KINGSTON, R.I. — February 9, 2000 — The political scene is abuzz with sound bites, ads, debates, and speeches. Here are some URI experts who can make sense of the jargon: Political Ads: Dr. Patrick Devlin focuses his research on political ads, particularly during primaries. The task keeps him busy. The professor of Communication Studies says an average of 160 political ads ran each day on television during the New Hampshire primary. Devlin can be reached at 874-4724 (office) or 789-0760 (home). Media Impact: Dr. Marc Genest studies the media’s impact on national and state elections. Although the URI political scientist is researching and teaching this semester in Alabama, he is available for comment. His number is 334-953-4041. Debate: John Devine, a debate coach for 12 years, coaches URI’s award-winning debate team. With advance notice, he and/or the team can be available to analyze a particular political debate. Devine can be reached at 874-4739. For more information or for experts on other topics call Jan Sawyer, URI News Bureau at 874-2116. xxx- For More Information: Jan Sawyer, 401-874-2116
