URI to offer scholarships for study and research in third world nations

KINGSTON, R.I. — February 24, 2000 — The Study and Research Abroad in Third World Nations Program, jointly offered through Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island, is offering scholarships to qualified students interested in study and research in Belize or Cape Verde, Africa. For the past two years, URI students in the program have spent their summers in Cape Verde, earning six credits for five to six weeks of study and active involvement. The program offers students the opportunity to interact with and participate in the cultural, economic, and business development of nations largely populated by groups identified as minorities in the United States. Applicants must be full-time URI students, and must return to URI next semester. Other qualifications for the program include a 2.8 cumulative grade point average after two semesters of study at URI and at least a 2.8 grade point average in the most recent semester’s work. Students must have successfully completed and received a 3.0 grade point average in at least one course in Latino, African and African-American, or Leadership Studies and have demonstrated an active role in leadership within the University and/or the community at large. To be considered, each student must submit a proposed research or study plan consistent with the requirements of the Study and Research Abroad in Third World Nations Program.
