KINGSTON, RI — May 15, 2000 — The Grace B. Sherrer Awards are presented by the University of Rhode Island annually by URI Honors Center to outstanding freshman, sophomores, juniors, and senior honors students. The awards are named after Grace B. Sherrer, a professor emeritus of English, retired in 1966 after having been a member of the University faculty for many years.
She joined the URI faculty in 1949, and from the beginning gave her time and energy to enriching the University’s programs and its Department of English studies. She played a key role in the development of the University Honors Program and was selected to give the University’s first Honors Day address.
Her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Sherrer Bown, of Connecticut, and her husband, Carroll, established the Grace B. Sherrer Endowment Fund, which is a memorial fund, in 1988. The Browns were present during the award ceremony and met with the recipients who are:
