URI Undergraduate Fellows to present findings on health research

KINGSTON, R.I. — May 2, 2000 — If you have questions about health, then fourteen University of Rhode Island students may be able to help. The students will be presenting their findings on a variety of health-related topics from weight management to aging and health at the URI Undergraduate Fellowship Research Night.

The Research Night will take place on Wednesday, May 3, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Electronic Learning Center in the Cancer Prevention Research Center on the URI Kingston campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The students presenting their research are involved in the URI President’s Health Promotion Partnership, which links students with faculty and staff for research on a selected topic. Students received a $1,000 grant and were part of one of five different teams that focused on a particular topic, including Aging and Health, Nursing, Weight Management, Minority Health Promotion, and the Alcohol Team.

“These students have worked for six to ninth months on their projects, and have each created a poster to display their findings. The night will be a wonderful opportunity for those interested in these subjects to speak with the students and view these great projects,” said Kira Stillwell, URI clinical director of health promotion partnership.

Rachel Kaplan, a senior psychology major from West Caldwell, N.J., did her research on alcohol consumption and its relation to high risk sexual activity among college students.

“I thought that with URI being a college campus, focusing my project on college students would be a way to reach them. I hope that they and other people can take away a greater awareness from this night,” said Kaplan.

Other students presenting posters are Aging and Health: Amanda Boening, a senior pharmacy major from Saunderstown; Michelle DellaCorte; Nicole Jones, a pharmacy major from South Windsor, Conn.; Melissa Mahoney, a pharmacy major from Manchester, N.H. Nursing: Susan Corcoran; Roger Williams, a nursing major from Middletown. Weight Management: Melanie Donahue, a physical education major from Chepachet; Cary Joseph, a physical education major from Providence; Joceyln Tracey, a dietetics major from Cumberland. Minority Health Promotion: Patricia DosSantos, a psychology major from Pawtucket; Michelle O’Connor, a psychology major from Feeding Hills, Mass.; Donna Taraborelli, a psychology major from East Greenwich. Alcohol Team: Kelly Lora Horrigan, a psychology major from Ashburn, Va.
