URI tick expert to host Lyme Disease Awareness Day at Wal-Mart

KINGSTON, R.I. — July 11, 2000 — Dr. Elyes Zhioua, director of the University of Rhode Island’s Tick Research Lab, will answer questions, distribute literature and exhibit a variety of ticks during Lyme Disease Awareness Day on Saturday, July 15 at the entrance to the North Kingstown Wal-Mart. The event will run from 4 to 8 p.m. “This event is designed to educate the public about ticks and the diseases they transmit,” explained Zhioua. “Not only do they transmit Lyme disease, but also babesiosis and erlichiosis, all of which are difficult to diagnose and can be fatal.” Dr. Don Nadeau will also be on hand during the event to discuss the symptoms and treatments of these diseases. The event is sponsored by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the URI Agricultural Experiment Station, and the American Lyme Disease Foundation. # # # For More Information: Todd McLeish, 874-7892 For more URI news visit: www.news.uri.edu
