R.I. Geriatric Education Center to hold programs for health care providers

KINGSTON, R.I. — August 22, 2000 — The Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center will present two programs for health care providers of the elderly during the fall. “Diagnosis, Prognosis and Geriatric Clinical Care,” “Workshop III,” will be held at URI’s Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education in Providence, Monday, Sept. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This workshop will feature presentations on chronic illness: levels of prevention, trajectories and comorbidity, the periodic health exam for older adults, preventive care strategies, and palliative care. Interdisciplinary small group discussions will follow. “Geriatric Syndromes and Medication: Delirium and Dementia,” “Workshop IV,” will be presented on Monday, Oct. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the URI/W. Alton Jones campus in West Greenwich. This workshop will focus on delirium and dementia, including behavioral management strategies and pharmacotherapy. The information presented in this workshop will be on syndromes that are different than those covered in previous workshops. Continuing education credits are offered and approved for nurses, nursing home administrators, pharmacists, physicians, and social workers. Other health care professionals are welcome to attend. The registration fee, including materials, continuing education units, lunch, refreshments and parking, is $85 for each program. Group rates are available. RIGEC (Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center) is a consortium of the URI Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy and Human Science and Services, Rhode Island College School of Social Work, Brown University School of Medicine, and Aging 2000.
