Registration begins for spring Learning Landscape programs Popular field trip to URI’s greenhouses fills up fast KINGSTON, R.I. — September 7, 2000 — Registration has begun for spring 2001 sessions of the University of Rhode Island’s Learning Landscape Environmental Education program, a popular field trip to the URI gardens and greenhouses for elementary school classes. A few openings are still available for the fall season. During two-hour Learning Landscape visits, children in grades K-6 explore the soils, water, plants and wildlife of the Rhode Island environment through hands-on activities. They examine bird’s nests and mammal skins, sieve soil to study the particles, feel composting worms squiggle about on their hands, and taste and smell the herbs and vegetables grown in the URI gardens. Learning Landscape is taught by URI staff, student volunteers, and Master Gardeners. To sign up for the program, teachers should call program coordinator June Kinigstein at 874-5706.
