KINGSTON, R.I. — September 13, 2000 — “A Crisis in Numbers” is the theme of the fall lecture series sponsored by the University of Rhode Island’s Department of Community Planning and Landscape Architecture. This fall’s series focuses on controlling growth in New England and on the impact growing numbers of people are having on some of the region’s most treasured resources. The monthly lectures are held in White Hall Auditorium on URI’s Kingston Campus beginning at 7:30 p.m. All lectures are free and open to the public. The schedule is as follows: Thursday, September 28 – Nancy Nelson, superintendent of the Minuteman National Historical Site, the Concord, Mass. park that receives more than one million visitors per year. Nelson will discuss “The Squeeze at Minuteman National Park.” Thursday, October 19 – Karst Hoogeboom, landscape architect for the Central Artery Tunnel Project and project manager for the restoration of historic Walden Pond. Hoogeboom’s topic is “Walden Pond 2000 – Can it survive swimmers, picnickers and preservationists?” Thursday, November 16 – Harry Dodson, president of Dodson Associates, an award-winning design firm specializing in site planning and landscape architecture.
