Assistant Coach Resigns from URI Position

KINGSTON, R.I. — August 23, 2001 — Shawn Hood, on administrative leave from URI since July 17, has resigned his position of assistant coach of mens basketball, effective September 7.

University officials met with Hood and his attorney in early August and an agreement was reached that it would be both in his and the institutions best interests for him to resign his position.

The University has not bought out the remainder of Hood’s contract.

Hired by URI in April, Hood pleaded not guilty to charges of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and turned himself into Fall River police on Friday, July 13.

Hood has not acted in any official capacity for the University during his time on administrative leave.

University officials were made aware of the charges, while Hood was on a recruiting trip for the basketball program.

A search to replace Hood has already begun.
