URI Theatre Department announces audition schedule
for its Fall 2001 season

KINGSTON, R.I. — August 28, 2001 — The University of Rhode Island Theatre Department has announced the audition schedule for its fall productions, Brighton Beach Memoirs and A Chorus Line. The auditions are open to the community.

Auditions for Brighton Beach Memoirs will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 4 from 7-10 p.m. and on Wednesday, Sept. 5 from 6-10 p.m. by individual appointment. Callbacks are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 6 from 7-11 p.m. They will be held in Studio G of URI’s Fine Arts Building.

Brighton Beach Memoirs, Neil Simon’s humorous play about growing up in New York City during the Great Depression examines the joys, strengths, and complexity of family relationships. The play will be directed by Bryna Wortman, a New York theatre professional director and professor at URI.

The cast is composed of four teenagers (two females, two males) and three of their parents. Those interested in auditioning are asked to choose a 1-2 minute monologue from another play that will demonstrate an ability to reveal the character’s thoughts with strength, humor, and personality. If possible, those auditioning should read Brighton Beach Memoirs in preparation for cold readings of scenes.

Auditions will be held for URI’s second production, A Chorus Line, on Friday, Sept. 14 from 7-10 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 1-6 p.m. by individual appointment. Callbacks are scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 16 with times to be announced.

The 1975 Broadway hit musical A Chorus Line follows the grueling auditions that chorus dancers must endure for a Broadway show. It departs from the usual glossy backstage musical by presenting a true picture of what it’s like to be in the theatre – glamorous but tough, heartbreaking, and even tragic. Paula McGlasson, URI Theatre Chairperson, will direct the production.

The cast consists of 30 singers/dancers, 17 who remain on stage throughout the show. Zak, the director, is a non-singing role though dancing may be required. Those auditioning must bring sheet music to two memorized musical theatre songs – one up-tempo and one ballard. A pianist will be provided. Bring additional dance clothes and shoes (jazz, heels, tap, ballet) for performance of a short dance routine in a group. Additional extensive dancing, singing and reading from the script will be required at callbacks.
