URI announces appointment of new controller

KINGSTON, R.I. — September 6, 2001 — Marjorie Harten has been appointed the new controller at the University of Rhode Island.

Harten has relocated to Narragansett, Rhode Island from Sterling, Mass., where she has run her own consulting firm providing financial and management services to the financial service industry.

She is a certified public accountant who earned her MBA and bachelor’s degree in accounting from American International College.

Her wide-ranging experience includes serving as the controller for the U.S. headquarters of Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada, vice president of Mutual Funds Operations for Allmerica Financial, and assistant vice president/director of Aetna Life and Casualty.

Harten is a member of the Association for Financial Professionals, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Connecticut Society of Public Accountants.

“Marge Harten brings with her the experience of creating a cross-functional team that successfully installed enterprise PeopleSoft financial and human resource systems and processes which we use here at URI. She also effectively coached and trained management and staff in project management procedures and methods,” said Dennis Stark, URI vice president of Business and Finance. “We are delighted that Marge has accepted this position and we look forward to her leadership and strong management skills. I am confident that this key appointment will enable URI’s operations to function more efficiently and maintain quality service to the University community.”
