URI students get to get down & dirty
at annual Oozeball Tournament

KINGSTON, R.I. — April 16, 2002 — With the end of the semester quickly approaching, students at the University of Rhode Island will push their books aside and take a short break from their workload for a day of volleyball and perhaps more than one dirty trick.

On Saturday April 20, students will join URI staff, alumni, and a few members of the community to try their luck at the University’s 12th Annual Oozeball Tournament. The action will take place on Plains Road, across from the football field.

Teams of six will get down and dirty from 9 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m. About 80 to 100 teams are expected.

Organized by the Student Alumni Association, the tournament was created for students to have a crazy time playing volleyball in several inches of thick mud. The fundraising event helps the student association sponsor other campus events such as the Homecoming bonfire and Midnight Madness. Last year, the tournament raised $1,500.

Oozeball will take place in drizzle or slight rain. However a rain date has been scheduled for Sunday, April 21, in case of torrential downpours.

Paris, a restaurant located in the Emporium on the edge of campus, is a major sponsor of the event. Paris will treat the first place team and its guests to a crepe party. Second and third place teams will receive gift certificates.

Other sponsors include the Newport Hyundai Autocenter, Durkin Cottage Realty, Graham Builders Inc., Eramian Signs Corp., Ronzio’s, URI’s Emergency Medical Service, 193x Coffeehouse, Bagelz, and Student Senate.

Gift certificates by various local merchants will be given throughout the day.
