URI Sorority to host national convention

KINGSTON, R.I. — November 22, 2002 — The University of Rhode Island’s Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. will host a national convention on the Kingston campus the first weekend of December to celebrate the organization’s 15th anniversary.

Members from the 24 undergraduate chapters and 12 graduate chapters around the nation will be traveling to URI for a weekend to plan business strategies, social programming, and review educational and political agendas that will contribute to the sorority’s goals and ideals. About 150 members are expected to visit the campus.

Several workshops, which are free and open to the public, are scheduled throughout the day on Saturday, Dec. 7. The first workshop of the day, “Money Matters,” facilitated by Robert Quirk of Met Life, is scheduled to take place in the URI Memorial Union: Atrium I from 1 to 2 p.m.

Another workshop titled, “Communicating With Tact & Diplomacy while being Culturally Competent,” will also take place at the same time. Facilitated by Dr. Dania Brandford-Calvo, Workshop II will take place in Room 318 of the Memorial Union.

Workshop III, “How to Buy a Home,” facilitated by Cynthia Santiago, will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. in Atrium II of the Memorial Union.

The weekend’s festivities will end with a banquet/party from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the URI Memorial Union Ballroom. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $15 for students. For more information, contact Michelle Torres at 401-345-4363.
