PROVIDENCE, R.I. — December 10, 2003 — Students who are 10 to 14 years old, like to write, and are always ready to perform for family and friends, now have an opportunity to plant their talents with a regional youth performance group, the Seeds of Hope.

Organized and led by the University of Rhode Island Providence campus arts staff and the Providence Black Repertory Company, auditions for this years Seeds of Hope Youth Writing and Performance group will be held Saturday, Jan. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon at the URI Feinstein Providence Campus, Room 423. The campus is located at 80 Washington Street in Providence.

Following a successful fall tour that included performances at the National Black Storytelling Conference and Festival and a number of community sites, the group is now expanding to include new members.

To audition, students are asked to come prepared to move and do improvisation exercises. Students may also have a poem or monologue to share and bring a sample of their writing.

Group workshops with the youths will be held Saturday mornings from Jan. 10 through April 26. This includes 14 sessions that involve writing original work, learning classic poetry and a variety of performance techniques. The group will then create and perform a play based on several traditional folktales from around the world representing a number of cultures. The group will then perform its works in a community tour, April 28 through May 17.
