KINGSTON, R.I. — December 9, 2003 — The University of Rhode Island’s Coordinator of Aquatics, Ted Boyett, was recently named ‘Best University Manager’ by Aquatics International, the publication of the commercial and public swimming pool industries.

A resident of Wakefield, Boyett is quick to credit the University and its students for the award. “This award not only reflects my own efforts but the efforts of so many others as well,” he said. “We have a tremendous resource here: our students. The use of students as leaders has enabled us to vastly multiply our product, which is exceptional service. The recreational services secretary, the assistant aquatics coordinator and other professional staff provide our programs with tremendous support.”

To understand how successful Boyett has been as URI’s coordinator of aquatics, consider this: Before Boyett’s arrival in 1995, not only had there been no aquatics director at URI in nearly a quarter of a century, but there also were virtually no programs of consequence.

Now each year the Tootell Aquatic Center offers more than 700 learn-to-swim classes; 50 fitness classes; 50 first aid; CPR and other safety classes; eight lifeguard training classes; five to eight leadership and instructor classes; and 70 hours a week of open swim and community service events.
The Fifth Annual Best of Aquatics Awards were announced in the November/ December issue of Aquatics International. Each year, the magazine presents awards to individuals, communities and facilities that provide services to their communities in the field of aquatics. The winners are selected by a panel of eight judges, five of whom are members of the Aquatics International Advisory Board.

In 2002, URI’s Tootell Aquatic Center was the recipient of several awards, including Best University/School Award from Aquatics International and similar awards from both the United States Fitness Association and the National Recreation and Park Association. The Tootell Aquatic program has maintained recognition since 1997 as the top university aquatic program in the nation.
