R.I. Emergency Management executive director to speak about mass disaster

KINGSTON-R.I.-November 12, 2008—David Smith, executive director of Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency, will discuss, “Mass Disaster, Incident Command” at the University of Rhode Island’s Forensic Science Seminar Series.


The discussion will take place on Friday, Nov. 14, from 3:30 to 5p.m. in Pastore Hall, 51 Lower College Road, Room 124. The seminars are free and open to public.


Prior to his work with the state emergency agency, Smith was chief of police in Westerly and Narragansett, R.I. Smith had already done important work for the agency by leading the development of the statewide emergency communication infrastructure. In 2007 Smith left his position in Narragansett to be the director of Public Safety and Transportation at Roger Williams University. In 2008 he was appointed executive director of the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency.


Smith holds a certificate of advanced graduate studies and a Ph.D. from Salve Regina University. He has also been a past president of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association. He also graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1999.


Organized by URI’s Forensic Science Partnership, the Forensic Science Seminar Series has brought hundreds of international, national and regional experts to the Kingston Campus each semester since the partnership began in 1999. Speakers representing the many different specialized areas of forensic science are brought in to present their real-life experience in their fields. These seminars have fueled greater interest in the academic forensic programs.
