URI web chat to review implications of the 2008 election, Nov. 18

KINGSTON, R.I. – November 6, 2008 – Maureen Moakley, a University of Rhode Island political science professor who specializes in state politics, political parties, and women in politics, will answer questions about the 2008 election during an online chat Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 1:30 p.m.

The web chat discussion will be centered on what happens now after the election and what this means for Rhode Island and the country. Moakley will share her insights and foster discussion on the topic.

Moakley earned her PhD in political science in 1984 from Rutgers University, where she also taught at its Eagleton Institute of Politics. She came to URI in 1992 and has served as chair of the Department of Political Science and director of the John Hazen White Sr. Center for Ethics and Public Service. Moakley has written two books, Party Realignment in the American States and Political Life of the American States, and is a frequent commentator about Rhode Island politics in local and national media.

A service of the URI Division of University Advancement’s electronic communications program, online chats are free and open to the public and are accessible through the URI website.

To enter the chat, go to http://advance.uri.edu/chats for instructions. Participants may submit questions in advance, but the chat will not begin until the scheduled date and time. Thirty minutes is the total time allotted for the chat. A full transcript will be posted to the University’s website once the chat has been completed. Questions about web chats should be directed to the URI Publications Office at 401-874-2075.

URI’s online Chats, which began in September 2004, have featured sessions with such alumni as Tom Mulligan, Los Angeles Times senior correspondent discussing the Iraq war, and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ross Kauffman talking about the making of Born into Brothels, as well as with URI administrators, faculty and coaches.

The chats are made possible through the cooperation of the URI Athletics Department and College Sports Online, hosts of the GoRhody.com website.
