Linzi Rae Matta Awarded Music History Scholarship

KINGSTON, R.I. — December 8, 2010 – The James Ladewig Scholarship in Music History was awarded this fall to University of Rhode Island undergraduate Linzi Rae Matta of Warwick. Matta graduates this month with her bachelor’s degree in music history and literature with a minor in women’s studies.

Matta, who sings with URI’s Concert Choir and also the elite small ensemble Lively Experiment, studies voice performance with Margaret Frazier. After graduation she plans to use the skills in research and writing gained in her history classes in her pursuit of a law degree.

Matta is also a member of the Peer Advocates, a group that specializes in violence prevention and awareness on the URI campus. She has been involved with URI’s production of the “Vagina Monologues” since her freshman year and last year directed this production, which is a fund raiser for the URI Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services.

Created by students, colleagues, and friends in recognition of the superlative teaching and research work of Professor Ladewig, the James Ladewig Scholarship in Music History is awarded annually to an undergraduate in recognition of academic excellence in and enthusiasm for the study of music history.

Ladewig, who has taught music history at URI for more than 25 years, is responsible for expanding the curriculum from the traditional classical repertory to include world music, jazz, and popular music. A specialist in the Renaissance and Baroque eras, in particular instrumental and keyboard music of Italy, he is editor of the 30-volume series, Italian Instrumental Music of the Sixteenth and Early Seventeenth Centuries: Previously Unpublished Full Scores of Major Works from the Renaissance and Early Baroque (New York & London: Garland Publishing).
