Hurricane Sandy Update Oct. 31, 2012

KINGSTON, R.I.– October 31, 2012 — As of 1 p.m. today, National Grid has restored power to facilities on the Kingston Campus, including:

  • Fraternity Circle
  • Gateway Apartments
  • Child Development Center
  • Transition Center
  • Christopher House
  • Sorority – Alpha Phi
  • TEP fraternity on Campus Avenue
  • Campus Police
  • Safety and Risk Management
  • Upper College Rd. Newman House/Admission, Women’s Center, Schmidt Labor Research Center and Visitors Center.


  • The following facilities are not yet restored by National Grid:

    IEP house, Texas Instruments House, Alumni Center, Foundation, Adams House, Tucker and the Emporium area.



    KINGSTON, R.I.– October 30, 2012 — Sandy was a powerful storm and the University’s extensive preparation paid off in all sectors of the campus.


    The Emergency Operations Center was staffed throughout the duration of the storm and personnel monitored the progress and developments throughout the evening. Getting an early start on this work (emergency preparedness, public safety, grounds, janitorial, maintenance, utilities and all business services) was key.


    There is cleanup today and repairs are under way, but there were no injuries, property damage was minimal and most of the Kingston campus still has power. Classes are scheduled to resume tomorrow, Wednesday, October 31.


    Here’s a summary of current status as of 11 a.m., Oct. 30, 2012.

    Power Outages:

    The University’s focus is on getting residential buildings back on line. Current power outages are dependent on repairs from National Grid.

  • Safety and Risk building
  • Coastal Institute, Narragansett Bay Campus


  • The police station at 85 Briar Lane has no power but the police dispatch is still operating on Lower College Road.

    Cleanup

    The cleanup work is well underway from last night and this morning. Crews are dealing primarily with wind-related damage:

  • Branch and tree litter
  • Multiple stop signs blown down.
  • Tree behind Potter fell down on three cars. Damage limited to scratches and dents; cars operational.
  • Tree in front of Aldrich Hall took down a portion of the balcony.
  • Tree limb went through a window in Aldrich – no injuries.
  • Two doors and a window on Hillside, door in Fine Arts.
  • The University doesn’t anticipate flooding damage.

  • Dining Services schedule for today posted yesterday, which included Memorial Union Ram’s Den open 7:30 am to 3 pm today.
  • Health Services is open today, Oct. 30. Students with pre-booked appointments should call 874-4763 to confirm.
  • URI Library is open, modified hours
