KINGSTON, R.I.- May 10, 2018- After filling PBS’ late-night time slot on an interim basis for five months, Christiane Amanpour, University of Rhode Island graduate, has been named the permanent successor to Charlie Rose.

Following the termination of Charlie Rose in connection with sexual harassment allegations, Amanpour hosted a half-hour CNN International program, “Amanpour,” which aired on PBS. Her new hour-long show, “Amanpour & Company,” will debut in July as an expansion of her previous program. The show is a production of CNN and PBS station WNET and will continue to air on CNN International and on PBS stations nationwide.

According to PBS, the program “will feature wide-ranging, in-depth conversations with global leaders and cultural influencers on the issues and trends affecting the world each day, from politics, business and technology to arts, science and sports.”

In a news release, Amanpour said she welcomed the opportunity to expand her role at PBS from interim to permanent, adding, “never has the time for exploring our world and America’s place in it been so urgent. And I am also thrilled to be a female filling this role at this time!”

Amanpour, a 1983 graduate of URI’s journalism program in the Harrington School of Communication and Media, CNN’s chief international correspondent, has earned every major television journalism award, including 11 News and Documentary Emmy Awards, four Peabody Awards, two George Polk Awards, three duPont-Columbia Awards and the Courage in Journalism Award. She has received nine honorary degrees, including one from URI in 1995, has been named a Commander in the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame. She is an honorary citizen of Sarajevo and a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Freedom of the Press and the Safety of Journalists.

In addition, the URI alumna has endowed The Christiane Amanpour Lecture Series at URI, which brings renowned journalists to campus.
