University mourns loss of Professor Emerita Lorraine Bloomquist

University of Rhode Island Professor Emerita Lorraine Bloomquist, 91, a pioneer in the area of adapted sports and physical activity for those with disabilities, died peacefully April 15. The University extends its condolences to her family and friends. A resident of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Lorraine’s love of athletics and physical activity started in her youth and continued until her final hospitalization.

She was a professor of exercise science in the Department of Kinesiology at URI from 1967 until her retirement in 1994, after which she taught part time until 2008. She was active in the American College of Sports Medicine, serving as president of the New England chapter in 1979 and on the Board of Trustees, eventually being inducted a Fellow of the College in recognition of her long and distinguished service.

She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from URI and her doctorate in education from Boston University.
