URI to host R.I. high school and middle school students at CS4RI Computer Science Summit on Dec. 20

Annual event excites students about possible careers in computer science

KINGSTON, R.I. – Dec. 18, 2023 – The University of Rhode Island will host the CS4RI Computer Science Summit on Wednesday, Dec. 20. High school students, who have earned URI college credit, are invited to showcase projects alongside URI computer science majors who will also showcase their projects. Local middle school students are invited to get excited about computer science by viewing the projects, attending a hands-on presentation, and exploring opportunities to enter high school computer science pathways. More than 600 high school and middle school students are expected to attend the event.

This event is free for the students to attend due to a grant from the Rhode Island Department of Education and community support of the University of Rhode Island.  Transportation for some schools was provided by a Career Exploration Equity Grant, which is funded by the State Governor’s Workforce Board. A detailed list of schools attending is below.

Opening remarks from URI President Marc Parlange and Rhode Island Department of Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. in the Memorial Union’s Ballroom. Events will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom and Atriums I and II, with other events in the URI Library’s Galante Lounge and Higgins Welcome Center.

“We are delighted to once again welcome the CS4RI Summit to URI. Hosting this event provides an incredible platform for both college and high school students to showcase the remarkable outcomes of their software development skills. The summit not only celebrates their achievements but also serves as a source of inspiration for the next generation of computer scientists,” said Vic Fay-Wolfe, URI professor of computer science and CS4RI team member at the Rhode Island Department of Education.
