Supporting Our Community During Times of Grief

April 8, 2024

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As members of our campus community, we are all deeply affected by the recent loss of one of our students. We recognize that this loss may be impacting your classrooms and teaching, and we want to offer support during this challenging time.

Understanding the vital role you play in the lives of our students, we would like to provide you with some guidance from the Counseling Center on how to navigate discussions surrounding grief within your classrooms. Responding in ways that promote health and well-being is crucial, and we hope these tips will assist you in supporting your students.

Additionally, we encourage you to share information about the mental health resources available to our students, both on and off campus. By raising awareness of these resources, you help ensure that those in need receive the support and assistance they require.

A designated gathering has been arranged by Student Affairs for all members of our community—students, faculty, and staff—to come together and connect with others who are also grieving. This gathering will take place on Wednesday, April 10, from 3 to 5 p.m., in the Memorial Union, Atrium 2. It will offer an opportunity for individuals to share their experiences, seek support, or simply be present in a supportive environment.

Your compassion and understanding are invaluable during times like these. By standing together as a community, we can provide comfort and strength to one another as we navigate through this difficult period of mourning.

Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to our students and colleagues.

Warm regards,

Ellen Reynolds

Vice President for Student Affairs
