URI’s Young Alumni Council to host webinar on Rhode to a Career in Athletics

KINGSTON, R.I. – Sept. 30, 2024 – On Tuesday, Oct. 1., from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., the University of Rhode Island’s Young Alumni Council will host a live webinar for alumni and students interested in pursuing a career in the athletics industry. All members of the community who are interested in athletics, sports media, and communication are welcome to join.  

The Rhode to a Career in Athletics is hosted by the URI Foundation and Alumni Engagement and will feature guest speakers and alumni Niki Lattarulo, Chris Poirier, and Aniebiet Okon. 

Niki Lattarulo, who received her bachelor’s degree in journalism and communications in 2019, joined SportsNet New York as a sports anchor, host and reporter in June 2023 after working as a sports reporter in Waco, Texas, and Nashville. At URI, Lattarulo worked as a reporter for URI Athletics, where she covered Dan Hurley and the Rams’ back-to-back NCAA Tournament runs.

A URI football player, Chris Poirier ‘90 earned his degree in human development and counseling and went on to become head football coach at South Kingstown High School. He has served as the general manager of Perform Better, a sporting goods store that offers expertise in functional training, rehabilitation and sports performance equipment, and facility design, since 1992. 

Aniebiet Okon received his degree in public relations and sports media and communications in 2023. He is the assistant director of graphic design for West Virginia University Athletics, where his responsibilities include assisting in the coordination of graphic design efforts for the athletics department, while developing graphic and social media content for the athletics communications and marketing departments on a daily basis. At URI, he worked as a graphic design intern for the football team and athletic department.

The webinar will allow students interested in exploring different careers in the sports world to learn what it’s like from alumni currently in the field. Each of the speakers will discuss their background and journey, providing students with a personal perspective on the industry and answering questions.
