As we enter the peak of flu season, the Rhode Island Department of Health has reported high influenza activity across the state, specifically highlighting the circulation of the influenza A (H3N2) strain. Additionally, COVID-19 and RSV cases remain elevated, further impacting our community’s health.
Recent reports also indicate an increased number of influenza-associated deaths and hospitalizations, underscoring the seriousness of this season’s flu activity. It is therefore essential to remain vigilant and to take proactive measures to protect yourself and those around you.
Critical Actions to Take When You’re Sick:
- Avoid close contact with others to prevent spreading illness.
- If you need to leave your home for medical care, cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue.
- Wearing a mask can help reduce the spread of viruses and offer personal protection, especially for those infected.
- Wash your hands frequently and maintain cleanliness by disinfecting commonly touched surfaces.
According to the CDC, most individuals with the flu can recover at home. However, if you experience emergency symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or seizures, or if you are at high risk for complications, seek immediate medical attention.
Recommended Time to Stay Home When Ill:
You should stay home until you meet both of the following criteria for at least 24 hours:
- Your symptoms are improving.
- You have been fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medications.
