The University mourns the loss of Will Simoneau, of South Kingstown, who worked for the past six years as a computer engineer in the College of Engineering’s Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering. He passed passed away unexpectedly on November 6 at the age of 36 and leaves behind a legacy of remarkable achievement, curiosity, kindness, and generosity that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
At just 19 years old, Will earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in computer engineering from the University of Rhode Island, becoming the youngest graduate at the institution that year and the top student in his field in the Class of 2008. He went on to complete a master’s degree in electrical engineering from URI in 2011 at age 22, the youngest to be awarded a master’s degree from URI, further solidifying his reputation as a brilliant and dedicated scholar in the ever-evolving world of technology.
Prior to his return to URI as a staff member, Will made meaningful contributions as a computer engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport. His innovative ideas, technical expertise, and unwavering work ethic left a lasting impression on colleagues and students alike. His deep passion for computers, electronics, and all things technological fueled not only his career but also countless personal projects and hobbies.
Outside of work, Will was an avid live steam model railroader who delighted in the creativity and precision that the hobby demanded. He enjoyed welding and working on various projects with his hands. He was also fascinated by Japanese culture, immersing himself in the language, cuisine, and traditions. He hoped to travel—and perhaps one day live and work—in Japan to experience the culture firsthand.
Will is survived by his loving parents, Larry and Martha (Marcy) Simoneau, who supported him wholeheartedly throughout his life and celebrated each of his many accomplishments. His sudden passing leaves an enormous void in their lives and in the hearts of all who knew him. Though his time with us was far too short, Will’s spirit, intellect, and passions will always be remembered with deep affection and enduring respect.
