The University of Rhode Island is saddened to learn of the death of Detective Sergeant Michael “Mick” Carreiro, who passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 28. He was 58 years old.
Born in Westerly, he was the beloved son of Idalina and the late Jose Carreiro. Carreiro dedicated his career to serving and protecting his community.
Following a distinguished 27-year career with the Westerly Police Department, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant, Carreiro joined the URI Police Department in 2021. His commitment, integrity, and leadership left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
In addition to his wife Trudee, with whom he shared 31 years of marriage, love, and family, Carreiro is survived by his four children, Ashlee, Victoria, Miranda, and Michael, who were the pride and joy of his life. He also leaves behind three siblings, as well as several nieces and nephews.
His family says that Carreiro enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time outdoors, fishing and golfing, taking pride in projects and work around the house, and finding joy in being busy with his hands. His greatest enjoyment, however, came from watching his children play sports and being present for the moments that mattered most to them.
