The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Rhode Island, with frigid temperatures expected Saturday and a strong snow event likely Sunday into Monday, with heavy snow accumulations and hazardous travel conditions. The University of Rhode Island is making the following modifications to class schedules, campus operations, and parking:
CLASSES
All in-person classes on all URI campuses are canceled for Monday, January 26, 2026.
No synchronous online courses will be held. For asynchronous online courses, please check your course site in Brightspace for any course-specific updates and guidance from your instructor.
CLINICAL EXPERIENCES
In-area pharmacy, nursing, and physical therapy students should contact their site preceptor/clinical instructor to discuss the appropriate actions to take.
BUSINESS OPERATIONS AND STAFF REPORTING
The University will maintain normal business operations on Monday, January 26, 2026, unless the State of Rhode Island closes government offices. All essential employees must report to work in-person. Non-essential employees may work remotely if feasible with the approval of their supervisor. Non-essential employees may also request to discharge vacation or personal leave. Should the State of Rhode Island close government offices, additional communication will be provided to employees.
PARKING
The University will institute a full parking ban from noon on Sunday, January 25, until at least 6 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27.
During a full parking ban, parking is prohibited on any roadway or roadside parking area throughout campus. Parking is also prohibited in commuter lots (6 p.m. to 7 a.m.) and faculty/staff lots (6 p.m. to 7 a.m.). Please be aware of these restrictions and park only in approved locations. Vehicles parked in areas where parking is prohibited during a full parking ban will be ticketed and/or towed at the owner’s expense.
CAMPUS SERVICES
Many campus services, including campus dining and health services, will remain open and available to students and the University community, but may operate on modified schedules. Community members should check updated hours of operation:
- Campus Dining
- Health Services
- Carothers Library and Learning Commons
- Memorial Union
- Campus Recreation
ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS
The cancelation of classes includes the cancelation of campus activities occurring during the same period. If you have questions regarding a specific University event, please contact the event organizer.
The University continues to closely monitor the winter storm and will provide additional updates about University operations as necessary.
