Feb. 5, 2026
Dear Students,
As we approach Super Bowl weekend, I want to take a moment to speak directly to our shared responsibility as members of the University of Rhode Island community—both on and off campus. We recognize that this weekend is often a time for gathering with friends and enjoying the game, and we want everyone to do so safely and responsibly.
Large gatherings and celebrations can sometimes lead to behavior that puts students, neighbors, and the broader community at risk. I am asking each of you to make thoughtful, responsible choices that reflect URI’s values and demonstrate respect for one another and for our surrounding neighborhoods.
Please keep the following expectations in mind:
- Know and follow the law. This includes laws related to alcohol, noise, and public safety. Underage drinking, open containers, and disorderly conduct are not permitted and will be addressed.
- Respect your neighbors and the community. Excessive noise, property damage, and unsafe gatherings—especially in off-campus neighborhoods—have real impacts on local residents and will draw law enforcement’s attention.
- Look out for one another. If someone needs help, step in early and seek assistance. Calling for medical help when needed is always the right decision.
- Understand the consequences. Violations of University policy or local/state law may result in University disciplinary action and/or involvement of law enforcement, with potential sanctions up to and including probation, suspension, or dismissal from the University.
University officials and local law enforcement will be actively monitoring activity throughout the weekend. Our goal is not to disrupt celebrations, but to ensure safety and prevent situations that could lead to harm or long-term consequences for you or others.
We also want to emphasize that this weekend’s weather is expected to be dangerously cold. Cold temperatures increase the risk of hypothermia and other serious health concerns, particularly when alcohol is involved or when individuals remain outside for extended periods. Please factor the weather into your plans and make choices that prioritize your safety and the safety of others.
We want everyone to enjoy the weekend responsibly. Your actions matter, and they shape how URI is viewed by the surrounding community.
Thank you for doing your part and for looking out for one another.
Sincerely,
Ellen M. Reynolds, Ed.D.
Vice President for Student Affairs
