In 2024, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) procured an all-in-one laboratory software platform, Onsite Systems, to improve laboratory safety and functionality for EHS and lab users.
Included in this software is the inspection module. Laboratory inspections are the single most important activity that EHS and lab users should employ on a regular basis to ensure safety. To this end, EHS, with the support of Enterprise Risk Compliance, has created procedures for how EHS conducts these inspections and how lab users can correct non-compliance findings and close them out through Onsite.
These procedures mandate monthly lab inspections, accurate chemical inventories, safety training, and prompt violation correction based on risk severity. Violations are recorded within three days, with correction deadlines ranging from 24 hours to 30 days in most cases. Past due action includes escalation to administrative staff and possible lab closure. Lab users must document corrective actions in Onsite and EHS will oversee compliance, enforcement, and record keeping.
These new procedures are currently in effect and are intended to ensure a safe laboratory environment, regulatory compliance, and effective risk management within the university.
