Spreading a little Rhody Halloween cheer

KINGSTON, R.I.—Oct. 21, 2026—If campus is looking a little spookier lately, it’s not your imagination. As employees and students move through campus buildings, they may notice a few friendly ghosts appearing on department doors and windows.

URI Athletics gets “boo’ed.”

So, what’s behind the haunting?

Human Resources has begun “boo’ing” departments across campus, but it’s all in the spirit of fun and appreciation.

Many neighborhoods have a tradition known as “boo’ing,” where a small Halloween surprise is left on a neighbor’s doorstep to spread seasonal cheer. Human Resources has given this tradition a Rhody twist by delivering ghost posters along with notes of appreciation to selected departments they work closely with. Those departments are then encouraged to continue the tradition by recognizing and celebrating other departments across campus.

The goal is simple: by the end of October, every department will have a Rhody ghost proudly displayed on its door. More importantly, the initiative serves as a reminder that every member of the university community contributes to the institution’s success.

URI Student Affairs displays their “boo.”

From supporting students and advancing research to keeping operations running smoothly, staff and faculty across campus play an essential role in making the University what it is. This Halloween season provides an opportunity to celebrate those contributions and share a little extra gratitude with colleagues.

As the ghosts continue to make their way across campus, Human Resources hopes the spirit of appreciation spreads just as quickly, creating moments of connection, recognition, and Rhody pride along the way.

Happy Halloween, and keep an eye out for a friendly Rhody ghost near you!
