KINGSTON, R.I. – February 9, 2016 — Teddy bears and stuffed animals will replace the usual admission fees for the University of Rhode Island’s men’s hockey game Friday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
As a way to get a head start on Valentine’s Day, Rhody fans are encouraged to bring a new teddy bear or stuffed animal to one of the last home games of the season to benefit the children at Friends Way. If they donate a stuffed toy at the entrance of the Boss Ice Arena on the Kingston Campus, they won’t have to pay the $2 student or $5 admission fees.
Friends Way, an agency based in Warwick, is a grief and support center for children, teens and families who are dealing with the loss of a family member or loved one. The center accepts donations of all kinds; to make a contribution, visit the center at 765 West Shore Road, Warwick R.I.
Season ticket holders are also encouraged to donate. Once the toys are collected, members of the hockey team will bring them to the children receiving grief counseling at Friends Way.
Senior team member Matthew DaSilva is eager to bring the donations to the center. “We’re excited about the opportunity to get more involved in the community and to help brighten a child’s day,” he said. “Something as simple as a little stuffed animal can really change how they’re feeling, especially around Valentine’s Day.”
