URI Landscape Architecture Lecture Series concludes with two presentations in April

‘Shape of Time’ on April 4, ‘Coastal Resiliency’ on April 25


KINGSTON, R.I. – March 29, 2013 – The University of Rhode Island’s 2012-13 Landscape Architecture Lecture Series concludes with two speakers in April. Barbara Wilks, principal of W Architecture and Landscape Architecture in New York City, will discuss the “Shape of Time” on April 4, and Elizabeth Mossop, director of Spackman Mossop and Michaels in New Orleans, will lecture on “Urban Landscape Infrastructure and Coastal Resiliency” on April 25.


Both presentations begin at 7 p.m. in Weaver Auditorium in the Coastal Institute building on URI’s Kingston campus. The events are free and open to the public.


Wilks founded her firm in 1999 and focuses on urban designs and public and institutional projects. She has won numerous national and regional design awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, the American Institute of Architects and others. Among her recent projects are landscape designs for the Seoul Performing Arts Center in South Korea, Hudson Mews Park in New York City, the American Tobacco Co. campus in North Carolina, and the Eubie Blake Jazz Museum & Cultural Center in Baltimore. In 2008 she won first place in a bridge design competition for the transportation authority in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.


Mossop is a landscape architect who focuses her practice on urban infrastructure and open space projects, including Cook and Phillip Park in Sydney, Australia, and Viet Village in New Orleans. She has recently been involved in many aspects of the post-hurricane reconstruction of the Gulf Coast. A professor and former director of the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University, she previously served as director of the master of landscape architecture programs at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the University of New South Wales in Sydney.


The URI Landscape Architecture series is co-sponsored by the URI Office of Administration and Finance, College of the Environment and Life Sciences, the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Rhode Island Nursery and Landscape Association, and the Rhode Island chapter of the American Planning Association. The Elizabeth Mossop lecture is also sponsored by the URI Coastal Institute.
