University Chorus invites new members to join

KINGSTON, R.I. — January 15, 2010 — The University Chorus at the University of Rhode Island will begin rehearsals for its Spring 2010 semester on Tuesday, January 26 at 7 P.M. Rehearsals are held each week in the URI Fine Arts Building at 105 Upper College Road, in Room C-100. All are welcome to attend this first rehearsal and there is no audition to become a member.

You need not be a student to sing in the University Chorus and there is no fee for participation other than the cost of music. Community members are encouraged to join. The music for this spring will be loosely based on the Requiem form and taken from many sources throughout the ages including works by Palestrina, Bach, Mozart, Faure and Rutter. The second part of the program will consist of lighter fare ranging from Shenandoah to Ernst Toch’s Geographical Fugue for Speaking Chorus. All are welcome and invited!

The 70+ voice University Chorus is the largest vocal ensemble at the university and performs a varied repertoire several times each year. It is directed by Andrew Howell, who was the first graduate of URI’s Master of Music program in Choral Conducting Performance. He is also organist and choir director at St. James Episcopal Church in New London, CT, organist for the Anglican Singers, and plays at the Watch Hill Chapel in Westerly.
