URI to break ground for construction of $15 million undersea exploration center, marine science library

WHO: Gov. Donald Carcieri, Sen. Jack Reed, URI President Robert L. Carothers, URI Vice President Robert Weygand, URI Graduate School of Oceanography Dean David Farmer, and URI Oceanography Professor Robert Ballard, along with faculty, staff and students.


WHAT: Groundbreaking for construction of the Undersea Exploration Center and expansion of the Pell Marine Science Library for URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography. The $15 million, 41,000 square foot construction project, funded largely by bonds approved by Rhode Island voters in 2004, will also house the Inner Space Center, new office and laboratory space, a central computing facility, administrative offices, and a new campus gathering place.
