URI plans steaming Alumni Weekend, June 3 – 6

KINGSTON, R.I. — May 18, 1999 — The University of Rhode Island is planning a steaming Alumni Weekend, featuring lobsters, long-lost friends and lots of fun. It all takes place Thursday, June 3 through Sunday, June 6. Highlights include the unveiling of architectural plans for URI’s new Convocation Center during the annual Alumni Breakfast, which takes place Saturday, June 5, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Led by Robert M. Beagle, vice president for University Advancement, as master of ceremonies, and Alan Wasserman ’75, URI Alumni Association president, the event includes a talk by keynote speaker John Geddes ’74, deputy managing editor at The New York Times, and remarks from URI President Robert L. Carothers. The Alumni Breakfast will conclude with the Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Awards, which honor 14 individuals for their contributions to URI and the community, followed by the unveiling of the floor plans and architectural elevations of the Convocation Center at 11 a.m. Afterwards, alumni can enjoy a family lobster boil on the Kingston campus quadrangle on Saturday, from 11:45 a.m. – 3 p.m. Alumni and friends can feast on lobster, mussels, clams and steamers (with chicken and a children’s menu of hot dogs and hamburgers also available). Children can enjoy a crafts tent, pony rides and “walking on air” inflatable toys. Campus tours by trolley, a botanical tour, and a concert by the URI band will also contribute to a fun-filled afternoon. Cost is $27 for lobster, $19 for chicken and $5 for children’s menu; alumni membership discount passes are available.
