URI Metcalf Institute accepting applications for workshop fellowships

URI Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting Accepting Applications for Summer Workshop Fellowships NARRAGANSETT, R.I. — January 11, 2000 — The Michael P. Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting is accepting applications for its second annual workshop for journalists to be held on June 25-30, 2000. The deadline for application submissions is February 1. This year’s institute will focus on measuring change in the coastal environment and feature workshops on fisheries, beach erosion, and water and air pollution. Twelve fellowships will be offered to journalists to attend the workshop at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography in Narragansett, Rhode Island. The URI Graduate School of Oceanography’s Michael P. Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting, provides working journalists in all media with room and board to work with scientists and policy experts in the field and lab. Metcalf fellows conduct research, interpret data, and discuss the implications of their findings. The workshop covers locating scientific sources, the role of geographic information systems, the ethics and principles that guide researchers, and data analysis.
