Scholarships for single mothers available at URI

KINGSTON, R.I.– February 11, 2000 –The Women’s Studies Program at the University of Rhode Island is now accepting applications for Eleanor M. and Oscar M. Carlson Endowed Scholarships for Single Mothers for the 2000-2001 academic year. Due to the generosity of the late Eleanor M. Carlson, the scholarship provides full in-state tuition and a book allowance to women who are single parent heads of households with one or more dependent children. To be eligible to receive the scholarship, the applicant must be enrolled at or accepted by the University of Rhode Island for the 2000 fall semester. Students who are awarded scholarships may attend classes on URI’s Kingston and/or Providence campuses. Previous recipients and applicants are eligible to reapply. Preference will be given to those who meet one or more of the following criteria: candidates who have followed anon-traditional educational track, candidates who demonstrate financial need, candidates in good academic standing, Rhode Island residents, or candidates pursuing a major or minor in Women’s Studies. Applications are available in the Women’s Studies Office, 315 Roosevelt Hall, Kingston, RI 02881, or may be obtained by calling (401) 874-5150 and leaving a mailing address. The application deadline is March 31, 2000. It is expected that three or four scholarships will be awarded.
