URI Spring Splash fashion show to present ‘Radioactive Dreams’ April 7

KINGSTON, R.I. – March 28, 2019 — City lights, vibrant colors, and pixelated scenes are a few of the elements that University of Rhode Island students will be playing off of at the 16th Annual Spring Splash Fashion Show, Sunday, April 7 at 4 p.m.

Students in URI’s Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design will present their designs during the “Radioactive Dreams” fashion show at the Wyndham Newport Hotel, 240 Aquidneck Ave., Middletown. Organizers said holding the event at a hotel for the second year makes a strong impression on the guests and provides the designers with great space, lighting, and sound quality. The show is focused on student work and their involvement in the program.

The event coordinator is Killian Maloney of Colchester, Conn., a senior in the department who is focused in design.

“As a senior running the event, as well as featuring my own work and energy, seeing the department come together and see all the hard work come to life is truly rewarding,” said Maloney. “It is awesome to see time, energy, and knowledge come together and hopefully raise awareness about the major for those who may not know much about it.”

Spring Splash is not only a fashion show, but a fundraising and networking event to celebrate the Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising, and Design. The event provides an opportunity for students to show their work as well as recognize the success of alumni.

Design awards will be presented to students in the following categories: Audience Favorite, Best Sewn Quality, Most Creative and Judges’ Choice.

The student designers have been through two rounds of judging by the department’s faculty, instructors and professionals. The final judging panel at the show is made up of graduates from the program and current program instructors: Allison Van Hemelrijck, ‘07; Kirby Nuñez, ‘16; Jan Doyle, program instructor and professional weaver.

General admission tickets to the show are $20 for students, $35 for the public. VIP tickets for students are $30 and VIP tickets for the public are $45. These tickets include reserved seating and a complimentary beverage. A cash bar and complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be offered.
