Rhody the Ram turns 100: Help him celebrate

University of Rhode Island marks mascot’s centennial

KINGSTON, R.I. – March 8, 2023 – The knees may not be what they once were, but Rhody the Ram is looking pretty good these days – despite his age. The venerable mascot of the University of Rhode Island turns 100 today.

To help mark the occasion, the University of Rhode Island Foundation & Alumni Engagement will hold a celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Memorial Union that will feature cookies and snacks as well as an appearance from the big ram, himself. All members of the community are welcome to come and cheer Rhody on, snap a selfie and congratulate him on his 100 years of faithful service to the University.

When asked what he was hoping to receive for the big day, in true Keaney-blue fashion, Rhody replied, “My friends keep asking me what I want for my birthday. All I really want is for every URI student to have an excellent education that enables them to succeed.”

To help Rhody out as part of his birthday wish, URIFAE encourages all members of the community to consider making a contribution to the RhodyNow Fund. RhodyNow supports every aspect of the University with timely, flexible resources, providing many of the opportunities that set URI apart, from scholarships to research opportunities to new college initiatives. The fund enables students to present their work at national conferences, study or conduct research abroad, take part in experiential learning opportunities, and much more.

The University will continue to celebrate Rhody throughout the year with celebrations and events. To see pictures of Rhody through the years – from ram lamb to today – visit the photo gallery.
