Going the Distance

This photo from the 1943 Grist appeared without any description. But readers made up for it with captions that ran the gamut, from sharks and synchronized swimming to the Hokey Pokey and, in an oh-so-Rhode-Island kind of way, lots of references to Block Island.

Maybe our winning caption was inspired by three-time Olympian Elizabeth Beisel’s 2021 swim from mainland Rhode Island to Block Island.

As always, we appreciate all of you who sent in captions. We hope that, like these ladies, your summer included some fun and relaxation in or near the water. And maybe watching some Olympic synchronized swimming, too!
