1892

On May 19, 1892, the Rhode Island state legislature passed a bill establishing the Rhode Island College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts.

Shields depicting anchors, like the one in this illustration, are an architectural element on some of URI’s historic buildings, including Lippitt, Ranger, and Washburn halls. A maritime anchor is the central image of Rhode Island’s state seal.

Green Hall

The iconic building with its gilded cupola and weathervane was built in 1937 and is part of the URI historic district, officially recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Green Hall is home to the president’s and provost’s offices and Enrollment Services.

Tom Boving

Tom Boving, professor of environmental hydrology and chair, Department of Geosciences. Boving has made access to freshwater a research priority. 

Marc Parlange, president, University of Rhode Island

Parlange became URI’s 12th president on Aug. 1, 2021. A distinguished researcher and global higher education leader, he is known for being active, involved, and approachable and is often seen at campus events in his Rhody baseball cap.

Vinka Oyanedel-Craver

Vinka Oyanedel-Craver, professor of environmental and civil engineering and associate dean for research for the College of Engineering. Oyanedel-Craver has made access to freshwater a research priority.

Skip Mark

Skip Mark, assistant professor of political science; director, URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies; co-leader of the Forgiveness is Freedom Academy

Deb Imondi ’82, M.B.A. ’86

Deb Imondi ’82, M.B.A. ’86, College of Business executive-in-residence. After a successful career in finance, Imondi is a volunteer and mentor.

CJ Hamilton ’25

CJ Hamilton ’25, molecular neuroscience major, Thomas M. Ryan Scholar, and URI campus tour guide. URI campus tour guides are known for leading groups of prospective students and parents around campus while walking backward. Here, Hamilton is depicted on the URI Quad, designed between 1894–97 by Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot, one of the leading landscape architectural firms of the turn-of-the-20th-century.

The Narragansett Bay Campus

The Narragansett Bay Campus is home to URI’s acclaimed Graduate School of Oceanography.

Community First Responders Program

The Community First Responders Program distributes naloxone kits and offers education about the opioid overdose epidemic.

URI Chickens

You might spot Mary Parlange’s URI chickens wandering on campus near the president’s home. Or you could just follow them on Instagram @uri_chickens

URI Sailing Club

URI club sailing is part of the university’s DNA, and the club punches above its weight, with plenty of championships on its books.

Rhody

Our beloved mascot celebrated his 100th birthday in 2023.

Ranger Hall

Ranger Hall was built in 1914 and was originally home to the botany and chemistry departments. Today, Ranger Hall is home to the Harrington School of Communication and Media.

Rhody Basketball

Rhode Island’s men’s and women’s basketball programs are a source pride and school spirit.

Harrington School of Communication and Media

The Harrington School was established in 2008 through a multi-million-dollar gift from Richard J. Harrington ’73, former president and CEO of Thomson Reuters Corporation, and his wife, Jean. Their vision was to build on URI’s history of excellence in communications and create a dynamic, forward-thinking school of communication and media.
