Hustled Out
1977 was a busy year. The original Star Wars movie was on the big screen in theaters everywhere. So was Saturday Night Fever.
In the 1977 yearbook, Renaissance, the editors, in comments about the changes on campus that year, noted, “We’ve watched the Pub turn into the Disco-pub, as the Ram’s Den dances all but disappeared.”
And the speakers and entertainers who came to Kingston in 1977 included some big names: Judy Collins, Timothy Leary, Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi, Billy Joel, Arlo Guthrie, Harry Chapin, George Benson, Ralph Nader, Charles Finley (owner of the Oakland Athletics), Irish civil rights leader Bernadette Devlin, investigative journalist Kenneth Wooten, and actor James Doohan, who played Scotty on Star Trek. (Note the runner-up caption submitted by David Wasserman ’74.)
So, while we don’t have any particulars about this photo, we can guess that, whether he was up all night doing the hustle at the Disco-pub or turning on, tuning in, and dropping out with Timothy Leary, this guy was probably just really tired.
